Welcome to the Luxembourg eduroam Portal
eduroam is a network service that aims to give members of the educational and research community access to the Internet at scientific institutions all around the world. This internet connection should work regardless where they are, without any administrative hassle. This is commonly called "roaming" and works similar to cell phone roaming in GSM networks: ideally, a user simply opens his notebook at a connected institution and immediately gets access to the internet. eduroam hotspots can be found all around the world.
eduroam is also an example of an identity federation between National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) and their connected institutions (universities, schools, libraries, research centres etc.). This means that all involved institutions mutually trust each other: if a user has a valid account at one of the institutions, he will be allowed to access the network at all other institutions.
Technically, eduroam is realised with the authentication and authorisation protocol "RADIUS", with a number of RADIUS servers, stacked together in a multi-layer hierarchy.
